Giving feedback to peers about their work is often more beneficial than receiving feedback because it is more cognitively-engaging. It involves higher-order processes, such as application of criteria, diagnosing problems and suggesting solutions.

Metacognition is thinking about your thinking. It refers to the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess one’s understanding and performance.

Non-cognitive skills are the attitudes and behaviours that are needed for learning, such as conscientiousness, perseverance, and motivation.

I have spent a life-time working in education (teacher, author, examiner and number-cruncher). I am now proud to be part of the team writing KS2 English lessons with evidence-based learning skills embedded in them. These lessons really are the future of education.

When I started conducting a two-year overview of the last 50 years of educational research, I had no idea it would lead to the emergence of 8 evidence-based learning skills that were common throughout this research. This was the beginning of EBL resources – resources that are grounded in and have been proven to work in the classroom because they are fully research-based.
