Power Lessons take the guesswork out of teaching.
Each research-powered lesson will usually cover between two to four of the eight key thinking and learning skills that have been identified by research as fundamental for the most effective learning.
These key thinking and learning skills are spread across a wide variety of KS2 English genres. Each lesson usually has two or three Research-Powered skills in them and each element has been used in innovative ways designed to keep pupils engaged whilst maximising their opportunities for thinking and learning.
Key Thinking Skills.
Higher Order Thinking Skills
Research shows that “in a thinking classroom pupils learn together by constructing knowledge and understanding”.
Metacognition
Metacognition is the ability to think about how to do a task and to then monitor the doing of that task.
Self-Regulation
Self-regulated learners regulate their thinking, their motivation and their behaviours to maximise their learning.
Collaboration
Students often can explain a concept to another student better than the teacher because they use student-friendly language and examples.
Peer Assessment
Peer assessment teaches students how to avoid mistakes and how to improve, but more than this, it teaches them that mistakes are avoidable and that improvement is possible.
Self Assessment
A cornerstone of lifelong learning is the capacity for objective self-assessment – the ability to judge for yourself how well you are doing.
Peer Teaching
Students gain practice in peer teaching, which requires them to understand the material at a deeper level than students typically do when simply asked to produce in a test.
Independent Learning
Independent learners are learners who are self-directed, self-motivated and capable of learning without a teacher.
