Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Science Fiction lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Title: Lessons from a Galaxy Far, Far Away – Grammar Gets an Intergalactic Upgrade called “A Galaxy of Grammar” Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Looking to energise your grammar teaching and integrate collaborative learning strategies all at once? Set course for “A Galaxy of Grammar,” an ingenious sci-fi themed lesson that will transport your students to new grammatical frontiers!
Taking inspiration from imaginative science fiction stories, this resource first reviews foundational literacy concepts like nouns, pronouns, and adjectives. Students learn how to enhance descriptions of alien worlds and robot characters through vivid vocabulary. Specific sci-fi examples lock in understanding.
But the real value lies in the out-of-this-world practice opportunities. Partner activities get students working together to craft adjectival phrases, identify adverb intensifiers, and expand noun descriptions. It’s the ideal way to make sometimes dry topics engaging! Peer teaching allows students to then explain grammar rules to each other – solidifying knowledge.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more stellar, the lesson also includes a bite-sized teacher professional development activity focused on peer teaching research. It highlights student feedback strategies to help optimise your use of this collaborative technique.
By blasting grammar with the imaginative power of science fiction and proven peer-based learning approaches, “A Galaxy of Grammar” is easily a 5-star teaching resource. It will take your pupils to new grammatical galaxies while enhancing your own teaching capabilities. Now that’s a win-win!
