Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Familiar Settings lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

“Adjectives, Settings and All That” Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Looking to teach year 3/4 students about using descriptive language in story settings while reinforcing lifelong learning strategies? Check out the “Adjectives, Settings and All That” lesson – number 7 in an 11-part Familiar Settings unit.
This 18-page PDF expertly blends core English curriculum activities with proven evidence-based learning (EBL) pedagogy. Students explore adjectives, nouns, and verbs through writing exercises like composing a story paragraph and instructions for making a snowman. All the while, they answer higher and lower order questions that hone cognitive thinking abilities.
But the real value comes from the seamless integration of EBL competencies like collaboration, thinking skills, peer assessment, metacognition, and independent learning. Icons highlight which of the 8 key capabilities students build at every stage.
EBL CPD for Teachers Too
As a bonus, the lesson includes a 5-minute teacher CPD section focused on thinking skills development. A quick research summary and practice-based activity strengthen your own classroom skills.
Overall, I give this resource 5 stars for its engaging content and alignment to EBL best practices. Use it to efficiently cover descriptive writing while empowering year 3 learners with crucial critical thinking and self-directed learning abilities.
