Activities in this lesson include looking at the characters in Red Riding Hood, using adjectives to describe characters, looking at the full text of Red Riding Hood arranged in a story mountain, verb work, synonym work, looking at the themes of traditional stories and answering higher and lower order questions.

There is a five-minute evidence-based CPD activity at the end of this lesson which will develop classroom teachers’ skill set. This CPD consists of a research extract on self-regulation with a five-minute activity based on this extract.   

Description

These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.

EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.

Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.

    I’ve just come across an excellent KS2 resource based on the traditional tale of Red Riding Hood. It’s called “Grandma Isn’t Grandma” and it’s a ready-made lesson that develops English language skills alongside evidence-based learning skills.

    There are some great student activities woven into this lesson, all with the Red Riding Hood story as a theme. Students look at describing characters using adjectives, arrange the plot into a story mountain, do some verb and synonym work, discuss themes of traditional tales, and answer higher and lower order questions.

    Through these activities, key evidence-based learning skills like collaboration, thinking skills, and self-regulation are developed. The lesson even specifies which of the 8 key EBL skills are being focused on.

    At the end there is a 5 minute CPD activity for teachers based on educational research into self-regulation. This research extract and follow-up activity will enhance your own skill set around self-regulation. There is even an action step for making self-regulation more explicit for students.

    I’d give this complete, ready-to-use Red Riding Hood lesson 5 stars. It develops English skills and evidence-based learning in a really engaging way through the traditional story. The CPD element also makes teachers more knowledgeable. I highly recommend checking out “Grandma Isn’t Grandma” as a valuable resource for your classroom!
