Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Familiar Settings lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

“On The Beach?” Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you’re looking for an engaging lesson to teach key English concepts like story settings, tense, and parts of speech to your year 3-4 class, the “On The Beach?” resource is well worth a try. As the second lesson in a set of 11 focused on Familiar Settings, it covers identifying story place, time period, and time of day through reading comprehension activities.
Students also practice recognising nouns, verbs, and adjectives while analysing a sample text. The collaborative partner work and peer assessment build valuable 21st century skills too. I especially love the five-minute teacher CPD on peer assessment at the end, which shares research-backed best practices to enhance your own formative assessment abilities.
By developing evidence-based skills like collaboration, thinking, peer feedback, and independent learning alongside language fundamentals, this lesson takes a holistic approach. It meets curriculum standards while preparing young learners for lifelong success. I’d give it 5 stars overall.
Whether you want to focus on English skills or work those evidence-based competencies, “On The Beach?” makes quality learning easy and engaging. Download it today to level up your lower primary literacy teaching!
