Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Science Fiction lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Title: Out-of-This-World Writing Meets Evidence-Based Learning in One Stellar Lesson called “Writing a Cosmic Paragraph” Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Are you looking to take your students’ narrative writing skills to new frontiers while integrating proven pedagogical strategies? “Writing a Cosmic Paragraph” is the resources that ticks both boxes! This complete sci-fi themed lesson is an English teacher’s dream.
Blast off with an immersive extract from an exciting science fiction story. Students dissect the text’s grammar and vocabulary, identifying parts of speech like nouns, verbs and adjectival phrases. This engaging genre-based approach ensures learning sticks.
But the skills practice soars even higher when pupils put pen to paper to craft their own imaginative paragraph continuing the astronaut’s harrowing tale. Targeted lessons break down the craft, from using vivid adjectives to punctuation like ellipses for suspense. Self and peer assessment opportunities let students refine their work to perfection.
The grand finale is a teacher professional development activity centring on self-regulation research. You’ll get a succinct breakdown of the evidence behind developing students’ cognitive and non-cognitive abilities like motivation, goal-setting and self-reflection. It’s 5 minutes wonderfully spent enhancing your teaching repertoire!
Simply put, this resource fires on all cylinders – contextual learning, structured writing guidance, student skill evaluation, teacher PD – the works! It earns a stellar 5 star rating from me. Engage your pupils’ imaginations and their learning behaviours with “Writing a Cosmic Paragraph.” One small step into this activity, one giant leap for literacy!
