There is a five-minute evidence-based CPD activity at the end of this lesson which will develop classroom teachers’ skill set. This CPD consists of a research extract on self-regulation with a five-minute activity based on this extract.

These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.

EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.

Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.

The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Goldilocks lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Teach English and Critical Thinking with A Clever Twist on A Classic Tale

Looking to cover key English concepts while building critical thinking skills? This innovative Goldilocks lesson does it all through a creative re-telling of the classic fairy tale.

Grounded in extensive educational research, the multi-faceted lesson develops five key evidence-based learning abilities in pupils, including collaboration, self-regulation, and peer assessment. These thinking skills come to life through lively activities woven throughout the familiar story of a young girl and the three bears.

Pupils sharpen literacy fundamentals like plot structure and character development while exercising critical thought. Creative writing and small group projects further reinforce the research-based learning strategies. The final reflective exercise requires pupils to evaluate their own understanding of the concepts covered.

This resource ticks all the boxes for any teacher looking to build literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, all centred around the engaging story pupils know well. The interdisciplinary approach keeps young learners captivated from the first page to the last.

I give this cleverly-designed lesson 5 out of 5 stars for its rigour, creativity, and practice of sound teaching methodologies backed by scientific research. Any teacher seeking an engaging new take on a timeless classic need look no further!
