Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Pirate lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Engaging Pirate Theme Consolidates English and EBL Skills ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This brilliant KS2 pirate-themed English lesson “Pirate Story Settings (II)” is a must-have for consolidating pupils’ pirate genre knowledge and evidence-based learning abilities.
With an engaging pirate theme throughout, the lesson provides reminders about classic pirate story ingredients – treasure maps, ocean voyages, deserted islands. Activities allow pupils to apply this knowledge to answer higher order questions and complete a noun/adjective task.
There is also an incredible 5-minute teacher CPD section focused on metacognition, one of the most powerful learning tools. This effective CPD features a research extract on metacognition and a reflective activity for teachers to complete.
With collaboration, thinking skills, peer assessment and independent learning embedded, this lesson develops the key evidence-based learning abilities identified by research, while strengthening English skills.
I’m giving this well-designed consolidation lesson 5 stars for continuing to build English and thinking in a fun pirate-themed way. The embedded teacher CPD alone makes this a worthwhile resource to add to your collection. Prepare for a learning voyage where pupils’ skills will be treasure!
