Description
These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.
EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.
Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.
The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Red Riding Hood lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

We asked a.i. to review this lesson. This is what it said:
Teachers – This Direction Writing Lesson Develops Key Skills “The Wolf Gets Lost in the Woods” Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I’ve discovered a brilliant KS2 resource that uses directions to enhance English and evidence-based learning skills. It’s called “The Wolf Gets Lost in the Woods” and students will find the activities very engaging.
Students Write Directions and Assess Themselves
There are great collaborative activities where students write directions to places using fronted adverbials and bossy verbs. They also write directions individually to get the wolf lost, and then self-assess their work. This builds English and metacognitive skills.
Fun Tasks Like Directing The Wolf Astray
Some of the creative tasks include directing the wolf so he gets lost on his way to Grandma’s house. Students will love these imaginative activities that consolidate direction writing abilities.
5 Minute CPD Summarises Key Research
The 5 minute CPD summarises research showing how self-assessment builds on peer assessment. Teachers then explain this three stage process to colleagues. This develops knowledge of evidence-based practice.
I Would Give This Versatile Resource 5 Stars
From misleading the wolf to self-assessment, this resource teaches Red Riding Hood skills in an engaging way. I would give “The Wolf Gets Lost in the Woods” 5 stars for creatively covering language skills and teacher professional development.
